Who is Emeritus?

Emeritus Senior Living (Emeritus) is the country’s largest for-profit assisted-living-facility operator with over 40,000 residents living in more than 500 facilities. Emeritus takes in more than $1 billion in revenue every year, is a publicly traded company on the stock exchange, and looks to maximize its profits and seeks to continually acquire more facilities throughout the nation.  Emeritus Senior Living typically uses the Emeritus name for their individual locations.

Emeritus targets vulnerable elderly clients who are 75 years or older – the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population.  Emeritus promises families that they are equipped to care for their loved one and tells families they are specialized caregivers for those with dementia and other high care needs.

As Emeritus takes on more patients in need of skilled care, the company is required by California state regulations to providing a staff that is trained, qualified and sufficient in numbers to deal with high-need residents.  Emeritus has been widely criticized for its failures in this regard, and has been the subject of multiple lawsuits and investigative reports.

What others are saying about Emeritus

Below is a sampling of critiques found on the internet from employees, residents and their families who discuss signs of potential neglect in Emeritus facilities.  (Source:  Glassdoor.com)

  • “Staffing is at a minimum, always, no matter how high your census or how much revenue you are pulling in.  Divisional VP always sending down message to put your community on a spending freeze at the end of each quarter to inflate numbers.”
  • “Chronic short staffing and labor hour reductions are just the beginning of the serious problems that exist in this company.”
  • “The management, particularly on the regional level, are very short sighted and laser focused on one thing…..profit.”
  • “Management is terrible. They never bothered to help you. Overworked and underappreciated employees.”
  • “You all need training. None of you know what you’re doing. I would never ever put my family member in this facility.”
  • “Night crew isn’t supervised at all. Staff treat the residents badly. Each shift never completes the tasks assigned. Medication regulations not followed. Health code violations. Sleeping on Noc Shift. Do Not recommend working for ever!!”
  • “Poorly paid. Constant berating, they hire anybody that can breath, constant turnover, focus on money no resident care, pay raises if any in pennies, residents that belong in nursing homes, untrained staff. I would not put my enemy in there.”
  • “They function on a “skeleton shift”, meaning they only employ the minimum amount of people it takes to cover all the shifts. Being called in on your days off is not uncommon.”

Emeritus Lawsuits

Emeritus Senior Living agreed to pay 2.2 million dollars to settle claims that it underpaid caretakers at dozens of California facilities.  In addition, PBS Frontline discovered that top executives at Emeritus were maximizing profits by cutting labor costs, which led to poor training and understaffing.  These dangerous conditions are occurring at the same time that Emeritus is increasing the number of patients they admit who suffer from dementia and other serious medical conditions.  If these practices are allowed to continue, frail elderly patients will suffer.  Our mission at STOP EA (Stop Elder Abuse) is to improve patient care in California and help victims of neglect and abuse get the justice you deserve.  STOP EA attorneys currently have and are prosecuting cases against Emeritus facilities in California.
